Finding an EFT Practitioner or Therapist

Note:  If you have an especially traumatic, complex or deep-seated issue to deal with, it is advisable to work with EFT, as with any other stress management technique, under the supervision of a qualified mental health professional.

Locating a therapist, counselor, coach or other health care professional who will meet your personal needs always means searching, but it is well worth the effort when you find the right one.  To help you with this process we post two lists of EFT practitioners, with their locations and qualifications.

The first list was compiled by the founder of EFT, Gary Craig.  It represents the most extensive and complete compilation of EFT practitioners in the world, and is accessible on his website.  You will find a direct link to it below.

The second list is a relatively short one because it consists solely of people who have passed the EFT Certificate of Completion (EFT-CC) Examination — evidence that they have studied and fully understand Gary Craig’s Basic EFT Home Study Course (13 videos on CD, 1 audio on CD and 1 Instruction Manual). The list does not, however give you any information about the competence with which the practitioner applies EFT (see discussion of the competence issue below), and like Gary’s list, this list consists only of those qualified persons who have elected to register their information for the listing.

The two lists overlap somewhat because Gary requests information about whether each practitioner has obtained the EFT Certificate of Completion, as well as other information, when they are registering.  Essentially the lists provided here represent two different ways of sorting the EFT practitioner information.

Strengths and Limitations of the Lists

Each practitioner who is listed, in addition to submitting his or her own description of their work, also fills out a standardized questionnaire, and their responses to the questions asked are given with each entry, allowing you to make somewhat of a comparison between the practitioners’ backgrounds.

Because the persons included on these lists volunteered to be listed on them, the lists are not exhaustive and you may find that some highly qualified EFT-trained therapists are not represented on them.  However, you will get some very useful leads from them nevertheless, and if you are seeking an EFT therapist you may well want to consult them. Here are some pointers to keep in mind if you do so:

Indications of Practitioner Competency

Neither of these lists provide information about the competency of the practitioners they list, but might be compared to the classified section of a telephone book which steers you to individuals who offer the services you are seeking, but does not evaluate them.  It is therefore up to you to explore the suitability of any particular practitioner for your own needs.  If you are new to therapy, you may want to consult our guidelines for selecting and interviewing a therapist: CLICK HERE.

Format

Both lists group practitioners by state (in the U.S.) and by country elsewhere, a very useful device if you are seeking in-office treatment. However there is another option which many people also find extremely useful, that is EFT sessions by telephone.

Many practitioners and their clients consider EFT telephone therapy to be just as effective as in-office therapy, and in some cases it may even be preferred. The reasons EFT phone therapy is popular are the following:

  • Concentration on the issue at hand may actually be greater during a telephone session than in an office visit because visual distractions which occur in an office setting are entirely absent.

  • Phone sessions provide special benefits in terms of saved time and cost of traveling and provide for much greater flexibility of scheduling.

  • Looking for a therapist who can work with you by phone allows you to select from a much wider list of EFT therapists in many different locations, including some of the acknowledged leaders in the field — a much more comprehensive selection than can be found in any single vicinity.

Fees to Expect

The cost of EFT-oriented psychotherapy or counseling is exactly the same as that of any other form of psychotherapy, counseling, personal performance coaching or any other service by health practitioners who are specially trained in their area.  Fees vary widely from practitioner to practitioner depending upon the practitioner’s credentials and their standing in their own specialty area, as well as their expertise in EFT.  Telephone sessions are charged for at the same hourly rate as in-office visits because both demand an equal amount of time, skill, and commitment on the part of the therapist.  You cannot expect a special financial arrangement because you opt for a phone appointment.

Exactly what will you pay?  In general, fees per session will range from $60 USD to $175, with the average fee falling somewhere in the $80 - $125 range. While these may be the customary fees for the professional services you are seeking, bear in mind that therapy using EFT is often more rapid than a conventional approach and therefore may be more cost effective in the long run.  However, ongoing treatment over time is often required for deeper issues, and if so this should be planned for accordingly.  Insurance reimbursement may or may not be obtainable for EFT-oriented psychotherapy depending upon the professional requirements and geographical constraints of your insurance carrier.

Practitioner’s Expertise in EFT

When evaluating EFT practitioners, in addition to assessing their professional qualifications, we suggest you pay careful attention to how much experience each practitioner has had with EFT, what their training has been in this method, approximately how many people they have treated with EFT, and whether they have passed the EFT Certificate of Completion examination covering the contents of Gary Craig’s definitive Basic EFT Video Course.  It is important to realize, however, that some of the leaders in EFT were already practicing this method before the EFT Certificate of Completion program was established, and that therefore some highly competent professionals have not as yet applied for these credentials.

Sometimes you can judge the skill with which a practitioner applies EFT by reading some of the EFT Case Histories on Gary Craig’s website. To access them, CLICK HERE.  In that section you will find accounts written by therapists about their EFT work with clients. This may help you judge certain therapists’ competence in administering EFT, although again, many a highly skilled practitioner of EFT has not had the opportunity to contribute to Gary’s email lists and may not, therefore, have their work represented on his site.  For those practitioners whose reports are posted on that site, however, reading over their reports should give you an idea of how sensitive these therapists are to their client’s problems and how creative they are in applying EFT.
